Remembrance Sunday is a solemn memorial day dedicated to honouring the brave men and women of the armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice by losing their lives in service to their country. This significant occasion provides a moment for the nation to reflect on the courage and dedication of these individuals who defended our freedoms and safeguarded our way of life. It serves as a time for deep gratitude and remembrance as communities come together to pay tribute to those who fought for peace and justice, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten. Today, we pay tribute to the courageous individuals who sacrificed their lives in the First and Second World Wars and various other conflicts throughout history. As we reflect on their bravery, we are compelled to ask: what ignites the flames of hostility between nations? Why do we resort to war against one another, tearing apart the very fabric of humanity?

At the heart of these conflicts often lies pride—a powerful emotion that closes our eyes to our faults and prevents us from seeking understanding. It is an unwillingness to acknowledge our wrongs and learn from them that fuels the cycle of violence. This understanding should lead us to a more empathetic and open-minded approach to conflict resolution. Pride, a sin that the heavens frown upon, stands as a barrier to peace and reconciliation. Many believe that God has little tolerance for arrogance, reminding us that humility and compassion are essential in the journey toward a harmonious world.

Psalm 46:7-11, reads: The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Come and see what the LORD has done. See what amazing things he has done on earth. He stops wars all over the world; he breaks bows, destroys spears, and sets shields on fire. “Stop fighting,” he says, “and know that I am God, supreme among the nations, supreme over the world.” The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

"Stop fighting." It's time for us to step down from our lofty positions and embrace the armour of humility. We must learn the power of a sincere apology when we have hurt one another. Only then can we experience the deep, lasting peace that the God of peace offers us. A heartfelt "I'm sorry" does not signify weakness or superiority; instead, it reflects a genuine understanding of our identities and God's expectations for us. Embracing humility allows us to connect more deeply with one another and fosters a spirit of reconciliation.
